In the beginning of the 20th century. The railway then came into being, and factories and warehouses grew up alongside it to service it. The growth of the neighbourhood, which had stalled somewhat between the wars, gained incredible momentum in the post-war period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Industrial giants sprang up one after the other, in some places in grassy areas and in others in former housing estates. <strong>One of these was the Elfa electrical engineering factory<\/strong>, built in 1948.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the area of Vytenis-Kauno-\u0160vitrigailos-Paneriai Streets, besides the usual workers, German prisoners of war were also employed in the construction.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n<style>\n#row-255810927 > .col > .col-inner {\n  padding: 50px 0px 0px 0px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row align-middle\"  id=\"row-1642146296\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1947097779\" class=\"col medium-6 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #e14d43;\">Between 80 and 8 300 employees<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Elfa started as a relatively small factory with 80 employees, specialising in general-purpose Ural motors and low-power motors for a wide range of household appliances:<\/strong> refrigerators, washing machines, audio equipment. Even at that time, Elfa was proud that if a refrigerator was made in the Soviet Union, it had to have an Elfa engine. Over time, more factories in different republics supplied these appliances, but the Vilnius-based company maintained a significant position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>In 1955, the factory began to produce what it is best known for &#8211; tape recorders and turntables.<\/strong> &#8220;Elfa-6, Daina, Spalis, Gintaras are just a few of the names familiar to the older generation. The products were exported not only to other local republics but also to Western countries. The factory had music ensembles, sports clubs, stage competitions, sports tournaments and a museum. &#8220;Elfa, like most other factories, had its own newspaper called &#8220;Elfietis&#8221;. It contained the latest technological news, internal affairs of the factory and jokes. Later on, the factory also started another innovative activity: the production of foreign language study rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The factory grounds included a park with a fountain, a sculpture park, a sauna and a canteen. It is interesting to note that men and women worked in separate rooms and usually met only in the canteen or in the yard.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\" ><\/div>\n<div class=\"row align-middle\"  id=\"row-694187535\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1006424087\" class=\"col medium-6 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #ed1c24;\">1993 Elfa factory goes bankrupt<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When Lithuania regained its independence, Elfa suffered the typical fate of Soviet-era industrial companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the beginning of 1990, the Gusev micro-controller plant left the association, which had a negative impact on the company&#8217;s overall performance. The company decided to start producing cassette audio recorders, as well as mixers in cooperation with the Romanians and video recorders with the Japanese. Photo by \u017divil\u0117 Diavara.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n\t<div id=\"col-2073907568\" class=\"col medium-6 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner text-center\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #ed1c24;\">Industrial site abandoned until 2009<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For almost 2 decades, not only <strong>Elfa<\/strong>, but also most of the upper part of the post-industrial part of Naujamiestis <em>(Uptown)<\/em>\u00a0(<strong>Sparta, Elektrit, Lelija<\/strong>) was abandoned, with sporadic production, industrial and warehousing facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At that time, Lithuania had only spaces adapted to individual cultural activities &#8211; concert halls, cinemas, theatres, picture galleries. Cultural centres in the districts were associated with exclusively Lithuanian folk and low-quality pop events. Clubs in the cities were mainly upmarket and posh. There was no place for other formats, creative events or underground raves. They were already taking place sporadically in different venues, often outside Vilnius. At the end of 2009, during the economic crisis, <strong>Victor Diawara and \u017divil\u0117 Diawara<\/strong> found one of the buildings in the area while looking for a venue. They decided to set up the first multifunctional cultural centre in Lithuania, open to different cultures and subcultures.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row row-large align-middle\"  id=\"row-805758996\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-370273011\" class=\"col medium-6 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner text-center\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #ed1c24;\"><span style=\"font-size: 90%;\">2010 m. duris atv\u0117r\u0117 Men\u0173 fabrikas <\/span>\u201e<span style=\"font-size: 90%;\">Loftas<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2010, <strong>the first independent multifunctional cultural centre in Lithuania<\/strong> &#8211; the art factory Loftas &#8211; was established on the abandoned territory of a former factory, in the former Elfa stamping shop, in a 500 m2 space at 29 \u0160vitrigailos St. Thanks to the efforts of like-minded people, this place has become an alternative and original space, suitable not only for individual events or parties, but also for concerts, performances, film screenings, exhibitions, fairs, festivals, seminars, trainings, conferences, dance competitions, fashion shows, and other mixed-use events, as well as for private corporate events or even weddings. Nowadays, it hosts <strong>more than 200 events a year<\/strong> and <strong>more than 100,000 visitors<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The arrival of the Loftas Art Factory has had a major impact on the surrounding conversions. Loftas fest&#8217;2012&#8242; &#8211; <strong>the first urban urban festival in Lithuania<\/strong>, which takes place in Vilnius Naujamiestis, on the former Elfa factory site and in the premises of the factory, including the Loftas art factory and the <em>underground club<\/em> Cechas48 (now Red cat), as well as other spaces in the vicinity &#8211; initially abandoned, later transforming into various studios, creative and other spaces &#8211; Radio Lofts, Brazzi Studio, Roberts Kalinkins Studio, Sofa Koja, Ki\u0161en\u0117, Gara\u017eas, Maisto bankas, Montis Magija, etc.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The 3-day international festival, which takes place in mid-September<\/strong> every year, is always different, with a theme for the year, occupying and opening up different spaces, presenting <strong>7-8 music and art venues<\/strong>, an original programme of <strong>more than 100 contemporary music and art performances<\/strong>, performances and art installations. It is the only metropolitan arts and music festival of its kind in Lithuania and one of the largest urban festivals of its kind in the Baltic States. The festival attracts <strong>over 20,000 visitors<\/strong>.<\/span><\/div>\n<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/fb.me\/loftasfest\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"button primary\"  style=\"border-radius:99px;\">\n    <span>MORE<\/span>\n  <\/a>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row row-large align-middle\"  id=\"row-421506059\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1143494869\" class=\"col medium-6 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner text-center\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h2 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #e14d43;\">Open Gallery opens in 2016<\/span><\/h2>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2016, after the founders of Lofts met the founders and curators of <strong>Improper Walls gallery<\/strong> in Vienna (Austria), Justina \u0160peirokait\u0117 and Urt\u0117 \u0160peirokait\u0117, the Austrian artist <strong>Peter Phobia<\/strong> was invited to Vilnius to create his first work in the territory of the Elfa factory. &#8220;He decorated the fa\u00e7ade of the Lofts with <strong>&#8220;My favourite plant is cactus&#8221;<\/strong>, which depicts the lush leaves of the South American monstera plant of impressive size, and wished for the site to unfold and flourish.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since then, the formerly abandoned ELFOS site has become OPEN GALLERY, a unique international open-air street art gallery in Vilnius, expanding every year with new street art works. The changing face of the High Town also attracted real estate developers, who converted old factory buildings into liveable lofts. The area is rich in industrial heritage, original conversions, and is home to a large number of creative, modern people with a love of loft culture and unconventional solutions. Soon, enterprising young people started to develop here, eventually forming the ELFA KIEMAS community.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row row-large align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #e14d43;\">Vilnius &#8220;Auk\u0161tamiestis&#8221;<\/span><\/h2>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2012, during a discussion among like-minded people, artists, architects, and neighbours about what is Naujamiestis and what are its boundaries, and what kind of identity we would like to have for our neighbourhood, the idea was born of naming the upper post-industrial part of Naujamiestis, which ascends towards Naujininkai and the airport, Auk\u0161tamiestis.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the number of
